I was invited with six other sculptors (Christo and Mary Miss were also invited) to the International Sculpture Symposium in 1990. This took place at Centrum Rzezby Polskiej Oronsko, Poland. This was the first time in 45 years that non-communist sculptors had been invited to this grand estate. While I was there thinking what to make I decided to take my sleeping bag and spend a night in the woods. After this I made the piece 'Stairway to the Sky' which was a self-supporting staircase that wrapped around a tree without damaging it with screws or nails.
This is one of many of the supports that makes up the staircase. They are supported by a single tension strap.
